How Maria Menounos Stays in Shape

It’s 6:45 a.m. and Maria Menounos is jumping out of bed, ready to take the day by storm. Why? Because her friend, trainer-to-the-stars Harley Pasternak has informed her that contrary to her belief, she does have time to workout. “Just get up a half hour earlier Maria, that’s all you have to do,” Menounos says of his advice for getting fit. “And I thought to myself, you know, I really hate to get up in the mornings but I can get up a half hour earlier, I can do that.”
Despite her hectic schedule that leaves her up before sunrise, out late at night and traveling in different time zones constantly, the actress manages to retain balance in her life—and her workout schedule. We drilled her for answers to our questions—how does she do it?
GL: We know you love to workout, what’s your favorite way to workout-and your least favorite (but effective) workout?
It’s kinda hard. The hardest for me is always something in the gym because mentally for me it’s not my happy home. I really like being outside so for me, my favorite is basketball. It’s an overall workout. There’s nothing that can tone me like a game of basketball. And also, my trainer has a Pilates, floor-based workout that I do in the mornings that is really great.
GL: How do you fit it in your busy schedule?
I was complaining to my friend Harly Pasternak one day about how I didn’t have any time in my life for workouts. And he proved me wrong. He said, you have 30 minutes a day Maria. And I said no no, there’s no waking up earlier than I do now. But I gave in and I started waking up 30 minutes earlier a day. Just 30 minutes. I wake up at 6:45, I have my outfit set out the day before and go to my backyard, I have a treadmill, I have a floor-based Pilates thing and I do some traditional stuff—lunges, stretching. And you know what? Its been working and it’s been amazing because I realized I do have 30 minutes. I think if you can get anything across to people it’s get up 30 minutes earlier. You get used to it and it does make a difference.
GL: What do you do to unwind?
I play with my dogs, I have to Bichons, a Standard Poodle and a German Shepard. They totally relax me instantly. That, and I love to watch bad reality television!
GL: What are your top tips for eating healthy on the road and staying fit while traveling?
I think the key is to have something in your purse at all times. I have some Blue Diamond Almond packs I carry in my purse. Yesterday I was running around all day like a crazy person and I started shaking and sweating and knew I needed to eat, like asap. So instead of eating something convenient and unhealthy like McDonald’s, I popped those in my mouth and I was good to go. Also, I force myself to sit down and have a meal. Even though it’s not easy with my schedule, it makes me aware of what I’m eating and gives me some time to relax.
GL: What’s your number one tip for glowing skin?
Well, my tip is to get it with makeup! Mac makes this mineral makeup that gives you shine and a glow and is amazing! Also, for an at-home remedy, if you cut a lemon in half and you rub it on your face, it’ll do amazing things. It works as an exfoliant and it gives you a great glow.
